I’d been happily preparing to write a post about our new place and our new neighbourhood – there is so much to share, and we’re loving it all so much! But I’ve been putting it off due to a furry little friend that has been painfully absent from our daily lives. Slinky the cat has up and gone on an adventure – or at least, that’s what we’re hoping. We’ve lived here for about a month, she’s settled in really well and she’s been gone overnight before, so we’re pretty sure it’s not a case of cat-freaked-out-from-new-surroundings, and more a case of exploratory enthusiasm… but it’s been six days. She’s never not come home for breakfast.
It’s been many breakfasts. And dinners.
I’m worried that she followed a few too many field mice and has found herself somewhere too far from home – there are little wooded areas all over the place and she could be camped out in any one of them. Thankfully Hudson is peppered with little fresh water streams so she won’t have hydration issues; there are houses/shelter within close reach, and hopefully food won’t be too hard to come by, either.
We’ve been out calling up and down our winding streets several times a day, every day – we’ve told neighbours, emailed shelters, phoned vets… my printer is noisily printing up a fresh batch of posters as we speak and we’re off to do some more blitzing. I am anxiously channeling the hopeful and perseverant spirit of Dan and John Spencer, who were happily reunited after almost 2 months. I’ve been reassured by friends who have some pretty crazy cat disappearance stories and I’m hoping that Slinky will follow her stomach and low-snuggle-quota all the way back home again… but every day a cloud settles deeper over this house. We’re all feeling it.
Slinky, it’s so hard to go to bed without you trying to squish up against me and send me to sleep with your purrs, and it’s so sad to wake up without you staring me in the face, patiently waiting for breakfast. I miss your trill-hellos every time you walk into a room and your daily visits to my lap as I work. Please come home, we miss you so much.
Good luck finding Slinky!! I really hope she comes home soon. Big hugs to you and Christian.
xoxo
I don’t think it’s yours, but take a look at this picture anyway. This cat has a splash of white on its neck, which I couldn’t see in your pictures. It was also found quite a ways away from you, in Pincourt, but the face is similar enough to make me think maybe, just maybe…

Oh, it was also wearing a pink flea collar.
Hi Jason! Wow – that’s not Slinky, but thanks so, so much for getting in touch!! Also his expression is hilarious, your caption is perfect :) Hope he finds his home, too… thanks again!!
Oh no! So sorry to read this. I do hope that Slinky makes it home fast.
Hang in there.

Thank-you so much Bess and Julia!! xoxo
Omg! I had no idea until now! How devastating to not know where she is! My Kris was gone 5 days and I was beside myself. But on the 5th, he came running through the front door with all his adventure stories to tell his indoor brothers and sister. This is my hope for Slinky!
Oh Erin, that gives me so much hope – thank-you!! xo
Try leaving her litter box outside for a few days, and hang some stinky socks or dirty underwear (gross, I know) outside. Cats are big on smells and if she can smell her way home she will. Canned tuna is a good thing to put outside too as she’s likely to be hungry by now. I’ve had quite a few cats go missing and return by doing these things. Hope she comes home soon.
Thank-you so much Victoria for the advice! I may skip the tuna as we have raccoons that will likely eat it up before she gets to smell it, but the other tips are doable ;) Thanks for the well wishes and for taking the time to write. Much appreciated!!
Oh I’m sorry! I really hope she comes home soon. Our black cat Zane was lost in the Alabama woods while we were in Wisconsin for four months and an amazing woman managed to get him to trust her enough that she got to see his collar. She found the vet’s number on there who got her in touch with us. FOUR MONTHS. Anything can happen. That was 4 years ago this summer and he’s currently curled up on the bed sleeping. :)
Sending you lots of positive thoughts. Have you checked the shelters and rescues around town? Black cats get picked up by the animal officers out here all the time because they automatically think they’re just strays.
Good luck!
Thank-you Nikki!! Your story is so inspiring – hip hip hooray for amazing strangers!! So glad to hear that your Zane came back safe and sound after – wow – four months!! I’ve been checking the shelters and we’ve had a few leads but no jackpot yet. Come on Slinky, you can do it. Thanks so much for sharing!! Helps so much.
i am so sorry that your cat is missing! i know how devastating it is to have a loved one disappear.
after i sold my house last october, i moved in with my boyfriend before i could get settled into my new home.
in december we we both went to visit our families for the holidays and the dogs went to a pet sitter’s house – actually a farm! i left my cat at the bf’s all alone with the neighbor’s feeding him. he freaked out by the neighbor’s accidentally feeding him dog food and having an empty house.
i got home and he was nowhere to be found. a couple of days later, my old neighbor called me. my cat had gone back to his old home in search of us! he traveled 2.5 miles and across busy streets.
i raced over in my car with the dogs on the back seat. i called out to him from the street and he came running and meowing with anxiety and excitement. i picked him up and put him in the car. he crawled to the back seat and sat between my two huge dogs as happy as could be! he was reunited with his family :)
i wish you the best of luck and will be sending good thoughts to you.
Hi Rebecca! Thank-you for sharing your story! It’s so great you found your cat!! I’ve heard of this happening and I hope it doesn’t happen to us, we moved pretty far away and there’s a big bridge/highway over water with lots of lanes of traffic between us and our old place. I can’t imagine her crossing that but at the same time, cats do crazy things. We’ve contacted our old vet and some old neighbours just in case… Thanks so much for the well wishes, I really appreciate it!!
Oh gosh – I hope you find Slinky soon!
Thank-you so much Janice!! Fingers crossed all the way…
Received a link to this via Lindsay Smith. There’s a black cat that has been sighted on Woodcroft in Hudson, near the path that goes through to Mount Pleasant. Not sure if that’s your slinky or not? I haven’t seen him/her, just was told by my aunt who lives near there. Feel free to email me if you think it makes sense that Slinky might be in that area. Good luck!
Oh, and my sister once lost a cat for 1 month and finally found him, so don’t give up hope!
Oh THANK-YOU Melissa!! I will head over there asap. She could be anywhere, I’m not discounting that she could be in Vaudreuil or Rigaud or even further by now. I’ll go check it out. Thanks also for the story, that gives me hope – so many people have lost cat stories, we’re a big group ;)
Spent a few hours sweeping the area, no cat but I had the chance to connect with a few neighbours and that’s worth a lot. Melissa, a big thanks again to you and your aunt for taking the time to write me and let me know! Will return to that area again tomorrow.
I had a look today while out with the dogs, will keep my eyes peeled and fingers crossed. Be sure to keep us posted!
Oh Allie thank-you so much!! So much gratitude over here. And, your dogs are so cute :)
Merci!!
